David Morton was recently interviewed on tastytrade’s* podcast, BOOTSTRAPPING IN AMERICA. In this interview, they really touched on David’s diverse background before he headed into the Restaurant Industry, what David is currently doing (DMK Burger Bar), and David’s plans for the future! Here’s the brief description that was given about David and DMK:

“DMK Restaurants own and operate ten brands mostly in the Chicagoland area. They also advise some of America’s largest companies on how to integrate food, beverage & design into their portfolios. David Morton is the Co-Owner of the group with Chef Michael Mornick. He learned many great lessons from his late father, famed Chicago restauranteur, Arnie Morton, who started the upscale steakhouses, Morton’s in 1978. David is a regular speaker at Northwestern University and in 2016 was inducted into the Chicago Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.”


David Morton, the DM part of DMK Burger Bar (Chef Michael Kornick makes up the MK part of DMK), was studying econ while attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. After a successful first business, which revolved around promoting rap and R&B shows, David decided to get involved with trading and opened up his own trading account where he found immediate success. For David, it was important that he witness different experiences before jumping into the Restaurant Industry. This was actually done at the advice of his father, Arnie Morton, who always said that you should do something aside from restaurants before going into restaurants.

From 1995 to 2001, David was extremely successful in the Trading Industry. After 9/11, though, David had a bit of an epiphany when asking himself “what is everything all about, what do I really want to do?” So, he sold his company to a clearinghouse and decided to follow in the footprints of his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather who were all in the restaurant business. David acquired a restaurant company and despite all of his knowledge and background, he described it as being a “phenomenal disaster.”

“I’m a huge fan of failure, personally, and I know that’s a little trite and maybe an even oversold concept. But it was great because I learned everything about what to do and everything I took from that experience became DMK and DMK’s business plan looked basically like the previous business plan, upside, backwards, and in reverse.”

For David and DMK, it’s important that you learn from your mistakes. Often times, there is more to learn from failure than from success and though David has been extremely successful, a big part of that is because he’s been able to learn from what didn’t work. When it comes to franchising with DMK Burger Bar, we’ve already made the mistakes (and learned from them) so that you don’t have to! This also includes Chef Michael Kornick saying, at one point, that, “there will never be an avocado in one of our restaurants.” Our avocado burger is no our second best selling burger (see, we learn!).
